As the Thanksgiving day feast goes down the trail and blends with Holiday memories past, I think ahead about the year ending soon. This was a really great year for JNESS Graphics. I met an army of movers and shakers. People who have inspired me to delve deeper into my sketchbooks in search of greatness. Aja, Andrea, Constanza, ...Estela, Karen Marie, Karina, Kenya, Latisha, Marcy, Tamona, Thais, just to name a few of the creative/inspiration giants in my life these days!

In the past found myself in the position of creating on a deserted island, rolling up finished artwork stuffing them into bottles and chucking them into the Internet sea. In hopes of someone finding them, "liking" them, and someday rescuing me from the solitude. I feel like that time has come. This was the year of feedback and validation. Plus size art is a small niche market, that is practiced by very few. Some do it in a not-so positive light, and some of us "go in" being mindful that the art doesn't just represent our abilities. The art represents a special list of V.I.P.'s. Each one unique, each one gifted. Yes my art represents, and I am grateful for the represented, watching and giving me a thumbs up when I hit the mark. A new year is coming and there is lots of work to be done...

THE QUALITY of DESIGN SERVICE

One would think that these words are the conclusion to a wonderful client and creative interaction. However, that doesn't seem to always be the case. Recently I met a client who is a young trendsetting entrepreneur in her own right. It's always a thrill to work for someone who has a great vision as well as a notable passionate love for what they do. In great length she articulated what she had in mind for what would become her company's logo.

Often I find clients who have seen my work, and trust me to come up with a cross between, what I am able to produce and what I think they need in a logo.In this case she is a client who knows exactly what she wants, and is relying on my abilities to bring it to fruition.Then came the surprise...among the great references she provided (saving me tons of time in the art of researching) was the current rendition of her logo. She went on further to say that she hated this version of her logo. This peaked my interest, because I usually like to get a feel for not only what a client loves, but a good understanding of what a client hates.

It puzzled me how a client of this caliber had interactions with a designer, including the drafting process, project reviews, revisions, and countless discussions yet the end result was a logo that she paid for in full and that she ultimately..."hated".

Upon further discussion, it became apparent that none of this good business practices took place with her previous designer. This is unfortunate because, it is a reflection on our industry as a whole. There should be standards understood by all that urge the designer to want to know exactly what a client is after. The designer should understand that even though it is the client's logo, the end result represents the designers ability to create as well as effectively meet the need of the customer by offering a wonderful design solution that completes the task and makes the client happy.

I understand that self promotion is an effective tool for creating a client base, but let's not forget that client testimony can make or break your design business. Designers and Creatives of all denominations please don't let clients leave your shop dissatisfied. I know there are some (not so rare) cases when some clients are just never satisfied but as a general rule "Aim to please"

As a Christian I am a believer in the practice of tithing, which is giving 10 percent of your income back to God. The concept of giving back is near and dear to my heart. Recently, I purchased some art from one of the well
known artists who does plus size illustrations. Most would say but, he's the competition. I say before I am an artist I am an appreciator of art, why not support? I also purchased books from some authors/clients that I have
illustrated book covers for.

I think giving back is an important practice, it helps build a community of creatives in the spirit of effective networking. Most of my clients are entrepreneurs seeking quality graphics and illustrated pieces to help build
the image that their businesses represents. I send potential clients their way when possible. And if I have need of their services, they are my first choice. I certainly need supporters of what I do, investing in others will bring investors to me.

Give it a try, we are all working hard to chase our dream, and to keep those
groceries coming, but don't lose sight, customers keep this boat sailing,
support others especially the ones who supported you.

DESIGN WORKOUT...

Just thought I would share something this week that I have done for years. Not sure whether or not it is the best practice, but I can say it is challenging and fun.

Start by choosing a magazine that you feel is loaded with design stimulation, and visual impact. I like Source Magazine, Essence, Vogue, XXL Magazine. It's up to you. For the next five graphic design related assignments force yourself to use that magazine as your reference guide. No Google images, just this magazine. It's tough because you have to make the assignment work for your clients, but all influence, and inspiration must come from this one source, be it a logo, postcard, presentation you name it.

Try it. It is quite a design workout, but it helps you apply some new disciplines while pushing your creative parameters into unexplored avenues.

For some reason, the results are always outside of my design comfort zones. Mind you, I am not talking about copying design, I mean channeling visual influence. It's still your work and will still bare the integrity of your designing style, just within the lines of a foreign source.

If anyone tries this, let me know how it turns out.

Jannette Asked: Why Do you Draw Plus Size Superheroes?

The answer is a simple one, Superheroes are American icons, they have been a part of our culture as far back as men have had imaginations. I am fortunate because my art doesn't just respond to my inner creative voice, but it serves a community that needs a positive voice outside of all the negative misrepresentations of Plus Size. So my natural love of the superhero genre makes it a perfect platform for including people of size into the pop culture mosaic.

It's not because I have a problem with the original versions of the superheroes or the demographic that they represent. It's just an artistic reinvention designed to speak to how we think and see people of all walks, shapes and sizes. Not as targets of jokes, disrespect, and discrimination, but as a part of our society and culture.

HOW TO MAINTAIN CLIENT RELATIONS...

Last week, I missed making the blog entry. Reason… You guessed it, "Life got in the way". Fortunately the smoke eventually cleared and I got back on track with my client related work and eventually my blog post. It's a case of the dreaded workflow domino effect.

This is a classic example of how a designer ends up being late delivering to a client or several clients. Which brings me to the point of this week's entry. It is important that as creatives providing a service to our customers, that we are always forthcoming and sincere about events that effect the timeline on a project.

When the unexpected rears it's ugly head, keep your client in the loop. They don't need to know the personal details of the situation at hand, but they need to know that the timeline is effected. I have found that clients appreciate getting the heads up versus having to track you down to find out what's going on. It's a professional way of working and it maintains the standards of the industry as a whole.

People appreciate the fact that you consider their deadlines and value their time, in return they value your time and will continue to patronize your service.

A Creative Exercise Challenge

I cue up "Change the World" by Eric Clapton and Babyface on iTunes, and fire up a fresh TextEdit page because it's my favorite part of the week Sunday night... Blog time. What a week, my region of the world has experienced an earthquake and a hurricane. Frantic, trips to the supermarket on a quest for food and water, going to my 9 to 5, and doing my freelance client work. This weekend everywhere we went was out of water except for The Water Shoppe (thank goodness) but that's another story.

Ok enough of the update, now let's move to my recent imaginings, and thoughts. As my client base continues to grow, I am faced with the desire to create more work at a faster pace without compromising the quality of my services.

I think back to a time when I lived in Canarsie, Brooklyn. My long running partner-in-art Dwayne - RT, and I challenged each other to do one drawing a night, over the course of time our nightly drawing sessions grew to a 7 drawings per night standard. We worked diligently to have fresh ideas, execute them and have a strong sense of maintaining quality while meeting the quota. It was an incredible exercise. It eventually became natural, it was a place where the heartbeat and workflow sync up. Eventually, we moved too far from each other to continue the drawing sessions, but I never forgot the standard we had accomplished.

Now I try to channel that energy when addressing my latest design/illustration challenges. I want to work faster, more effectively, and at a high standard. I desire to be Bionic! (sorry, I grew up in the 70's watching "The Six Million Dollar Man") Lol!

The dilemma, I often face...
I have client work to schedule, and make happen in a timely manner, and keeping my clients happy. I have a promotion I am running on facebook, where two wonderful contestants get a chance to win a free portrait, it involves me doing 16 portraits in all (great project - but it requires time to complete). And last but not least, I need to continue creating relevant inspired art that will be made available in my online store (the really fun stuff).

The issue at hand is accomplishing all these things harmoniously. It's important as creatives that we take the time out necessary to do the personal projects that reflect the untamed inspirations when they come. That fiery Mexican muse, that has to be captured in an explosive illustration. That make-up artist from Chile who lives in Vegas that you must draw to survive. Those creative ideas that have to be explored, the list goes on. Its unhealthy for an artist to ignore creative passions. All work and no play... well you know the rest.

My new challenge to myself is to get one piece created from the heart per week. This project will be called INSPIRATA. It's not a collection, it's more of an incentive. The quality of my other works benefit from the existence of an exercise like this. I challenge other artists and designers to do this for themselves as well, you won't regret it. Create something weekly that stems from somewhere deep inside.

Design Research is Key

I am finding more and more each day that thick skin, flexibility and a grain of salt are all necessary elements in the backpack arsenal of a graphic designer and illustrator. It's less complicated to work systematically, and do things in the same formula each time. But every client has different needs. What works for one may not work for the other.

The defining line between one project and the next is research. Research is key. Not just sitting down with the client to find out what they want, but researching the topic, competitors, and overall vibe. I know there are usually limitations mandated by time constraints, but the more energy placed on research the richer the resulting content will be. It's like trying to grasp the taste of pizza from the smell and look alone. The extra research is actually taking a bite. The people your project is communicating to can feel the difference, between a generic take on a topic, versus a thoughtful, well researched, first hand take on the design statement being made.

Quite often the time I spend in my sketchbook, is valuable research time. I pull from different elements, hashing them out, with lead / ink to paper. it helps me get my head around the topic at hand. The topic can be as calm as a kitten or as elusive as a squirrel. Either way I have to claim it and tame it into my realm of understanding. there is always the inevitable Google search. The short cut saving you a trip to the local library and that stash of aging magazines designers swear they will need someday. I refer to my Google image searches as going shopping. I download images on my computer, on my phone, take pictures as the unction hits me. What ever it takes to get the relevant visual data, that will enable me to meet the need of my client. Go the extra mile when you can. Do your research.

To Blog or Not To Blog?

So the mad dash begins again. Hi Aja (this blog is the result of many conversations with my good friend) I used to blog feverishly in hopes of adding my experience to the table for designers, interested parties, and anyone who would listen. Then there was a brief hiatus...

Finally I returned posting as much artwork as I could muster (weekly). The only problem was, my voice was missing, I was just posting art. Ultimately it's six of one, half a dozen of another. But, I have decided to add my voice to the mix again. I have to mention my friend Chef Jeff Rogers who also shared in to... "To Blog or Not To Blog" dialog. He is a caterer, restaurantor, and he is destined to become a monster at blogging!

Things have been really good, after the economy seemed to make art take the back seat to life for a minute, business has picked up again thanks to the contest I am running from my fanpage. It's good to be in the hustle and bustle of client related work again, along with its ups and downs. In regard to the question... To Blog Or Not To Blog? I havechosen to Blog!! And I plan to hit the ground running!

Child of the 1970's that I am it's no surprise that this piece eventually came into existence. Thank God for Illustration Friday, I'm never at a shortage for fresh ideas. Their website generates the prompt, then the community of illustrators meet the challenge. It's always inspiring to see how each artist takes the prompt and puts their creative spin on it. There is one artist who makes every entry relate to the sea and cliffs that look like a beautiful quilt.

My entry is a full figured / curvy woman. on an old school banana seat bike. I am pleased with the results of this sketch, it's colorful, light-hearted and retro. Enjoy!

Journey by JNESS

I would love to time myself and report how long it takes me to complete a sketch like this. I always appreciate those extra tidbits when I visit other artist's blogs and websites. Unfortunately I would have a hard time bringing you an accurate assessment. My workflow is convoluted with interruptions, occasional pauses to watch something on the Food Network or my daughter requesting a big hug or a snack. Autism waits for no man, or any drawing endeavors.

So for the sake of the argument I devoted an evening to this sketch. The Illustration Friday Challenge was "Journey" I immediately thought of a hiker in the whole outfit. Then I thought about the Laura Croft character from the Tomb Raider Game. So this week I sketched a plus sized ode to Laura. The traveller prepared for the JOURNEY. This illustration is done in alcohol based markers, and acrylic paint for highlights.

Vacation Day by JNESS

It's time for the victory dance. Even though the drive of an artist is normally switched to the "create" position on the art machine, we often face several beasts of the trade such as procrastination, lack of inspiration, and burn out. This weekend I put on my armor and decided to do battle with the 'relax' breathing dragon called "my sofa".

There were great movies on the television all weekend, and I even yielded to watch Chef Sunny Anderson work her magic on a jumbo shrimp dish. But I kept fighting the good fight. Yes, rest is a necessary part of life, but not at the expense of loosing the farm. I put on one of those cable channels that just plays a giant playlist of 80's tunes and started to work. I completed a project that had somehow ended on the shelf and the deadline was rapidly approaching. I was happy with the results. I am waiting to hear back from the client. I also managed to get a sketch done. It's important to generate fresh content on a weekly basis. I know there are some faithful visitors looking for my artwork, I don't want to let them down. So without further fanfare here is my new sketch appropriately named... VACATION DAY

Sometimes you don't have to travel very far to get away. Every now and then a day to yourself when the cell phone is off, and emails go unanswered is all it takes to recalibrate. This curvy sketch displays such an event...

This piece is a superhero mash-up that is “untitled” it features a mustached almost bearded Captain America, the Flash, and a plus-sized Wonder Woman. As far as women in comic books are concerned, I consider her the first lady and the pioneer. Here she is featured in a Greco-Roman uniform (minus the helmet) Her character is that of the warrior, dedicated and focused on the battle ahead.
I wanted the treatment on the men to look like chipped stone, in order to contrast Wonder Woman’s soft line treatment.

It seems like more and more these days the response to doing the things that I enjoy is, "Sometimes life gets in the way." So I have had to change my strategies to get these goals accomplished. This week I am working on my take on BURNING for Illustration Friday. Last week I posted random art for AFTERWARDS. I was not pleased because the real piece I wanted to post was the one.

I am running behind with BURNING so rather than post randomly or miss the boat I decided to post the work in progress. Once it's complete I will add it to this post. Hopefully, I get some feedback. This illustration/ fan art features a Marvel Comics and DC Comics mash up group I call The Champions (yes, I know it's taken- to all my comic book aficionados) this group is all in the name of fun. The group I would love to see formed featuring Batman, Robin, Power Man, Iron Fist, Puck (from Alpha Flight) Batgirl, and The Thing (of the Fantastic Four).

In this scene they are up against a "Burning" fire wielding plus-sized enemy (with no name - lol). I know - I sound like a twelve year old, but that's whatI love about art. Creating what you want, the way you want. That's what makes it fun. This piece also appears in my VIEW FROM UP HERE sketchbook.

An avid writer and conversationalist all of her life, Sharon Denise Moore has finally given into her calling as a writer and is sharing her unique viewpoint, witty sense of humor and, creativity with the world. Sharon is a former editor and writer for a NC-based e-zine and has also written for local newspapers as well as ANOINTED magazine. She attended both the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina Central University where she majored in every course that allowed her to do what she does best – express herself. That path of coursework led her to successfully (and effortlessly) minor in Communications and Education.

At what point in your life did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

The idea hit me somewhere around 1999/2000 when I was writing articles for the singles portion of my church newsletter as well as a small local newspaper. I was encouraged by a woman who attended the same church as I did (at that time). I was forever regaling her as well as others with the crazy events in my life. She repeatedly told me, "You should write a book!". A year or so later I began have the same dream almost every night and sometimes multiple times a night. Once I began to write the dream down I realized, "Hey! I really can write a book!"

What author was the biggest influence to you?

Wow, it’s hard to say. I cannot attribute that honor to just one author so I’ll have to name several. I love the way James Patterson and David Baldacchi educate their readers by adding just enough truth in their novels to make them seem real. I also like the way they structure their plots. I truly enjoy the way Alexander McCall Smith delves into morality and philosophy in his novels. You always leave his books exploring what you would do if faced with those same circumstances. I enjoy the humor of Emily Carmichael, Janet Evanovich, Anne George and Kimberly Matthews-Hooker (to name a few). Their writing encouraged me to yield to my silly sense of humor in my writing. I also enjoy the feel, tempo and ethnic realness in Eric Jerome Dickey’s writing.

How does your day job add fuel to you as a writer?

It’s actually more of a distraction. Occasionally a name may come across my desk that I like (usually just a first or last name) that may find its way into my story but that’s the extent of it.

I noticed that you apply great attention to detail on every character. Why is that so important to you?

Because I know my characters and I want my readers to know them as well as I do. The characters live inside my head. I know their likes, dislikes, quirks, etc. I work hard to give the reader(s) not only a visual idea of what they look like but also a taste of who these people actually are on the inside.

How much do you draw from your life experiences?

In my latest book – everything! I read once that every writer has an autobiographical element in their novels be it a childhood memory, knowledge of a certain city, people, culture, lifestyle or even food they have tasted and enjoyed/hated. It adds a measure of authenticity to the writing. You can’t help but write what you know. In "Six Of One Or Half A Dozen Of Another", I took twenty-three years of my dating history plus dating stories I’ve heard from people over the years and complied them into the story of Amerigua – my main character. In order to protect my privacy, as well as others, I changed up the facts. For example if I did something in real life, I would have the character (when faced with the same dilemma) make the choice not to do that particular thing. In situations where the truth was more poignant and fit the storyline, I made other changes to protect the [actual living] parties involved.

Have you ever experienced writer’s block and what’s your method of overcoming it?

YES! The best method for me is to take a day or so away from the novel. The other solution I’ve found is to work on another aspect of the novel whether that involves doing research, editing another portion of what I’ve written or making decisions about marketing options. Coming back with fresh eyes always works wonders.

What authors do you currently read?

That’s a hard question. In the last 30-45 days I’ve read (or listened to)the newest offerings by James Patterson, David Baldacchi, Alexander McCall Smith and Janet Evanovich. Currently I am reading "The Cat Who…" series by Lilian Jackson Braun. When I am writing I try to stay away from the genre I am writing in to ensure my ideas are authentically mine and not an unconscious reflection of something I’ve already read.

When you are working on a project do you read other works during the process?

Yes I do read while I am writing but I don’t read anything in the same genre I am writing in or anything with a similar storyline, etc.

Tell us about your most current project.

I thought you’d never ask! (smile) SIX OF ONE OR HALF A DOZEN OF THE OTHER is the story of Amerigua who is a fortysomething-year-old, single, never-been-married, childless, super plus-sized woman. All of Amerigua’s friends are married and pregnant or have children. She begins to feel more pressure than ever to meet Mr. Right and settle down as well. Unfortunately Amerigua adopts a "by-any-means-necessary" mentality which leads to lots of laughs, heart ache and a major reality check when she evaluates the people she has in her life and why she allows them to remain there. She also decides what she actually wants out of her life and from any man in her life. Based on several true events (as well as some fictitious) Amerigua allows the reader to evaluate if they are like any of the characters in Amerigua’s world and if so, what changes (if any) they will make for the Amerigua they know or for themselves.

Do you proof read everything you see?

If you’re asking if I proofread every article, email, letter, etc. that crosses my path – yes. It’s a curse! I can’t help it! If you are referring to my proofreading my own work then yes, I do that as well but ultimately the final editing is handled by professionals.

If you wrote a book in the bible what would it be entitled?

That’s a deep question. I’m not sure. Maybe 2nd Job.

What would you want a reader to walk away with after reading your book?

I would want my readers walking away with something to talk about as a result of a new perspective or having had their current perspective affirmed. I wrote "SIX" in a way that people could comfortably take sides. One person may view Amerigua as a villain whereas someone else would view her as a heroine. Either way it gives them something to consider and discuss.
I would love for BBWs (Big Beautiful Women) and BHMs (Big Handsome Men) to come away with a greater understanding and appreciation of their self worth. I would also like those who are not BBWs or BHMs to come away with an understanding that people of size are just as worthy of love and respect as anyone else. Focusing on the outer is temporary because that can be altered but focusing on the inside causes you to deal with someone authentically. That rarely changes.

Has being a full-figured woman added or subtracted anything from your literary voice as a writer?

It’s added tremendously. In "Six" the main character, Amerigua, is a BBW who weighs over three hundred pounds yet still gets attention from men. Having walked that journey I wanted to share that experience. The Biggest Loser is the only show/form of BBW-friendly entertainment that features super plus sized people but those people are there to lose weight. With the exception of one, no show accepts BBWs (or larger) as is. They demand that we make some change in order to deserve the prize offered.
There is also this misnomer that no man would want a BBW or BBW+ and if a man does it’s because he’s the same size. That’s not true and I was totally disappointed with Fox television for depicting that in their new reality series "More To Love".
The fact is that most BBWs and BBWs+ date/marry men who are not BHMs. If people want to see a more realistic view of a BBW involved in romance they should watch Tyler Perry’s "Why Did I Get Married" and study the dynamics of Troy & Sheila although Sheila’s first marriage is a reality as well. It’s time for the real BBW story to be told. The good, the bad and the embarrassing.

Will your book be self published or have you signed up with a publishing house?

If so how has that effected your creative freedom?

I am definitely self publishing through Outskirts Press. I made that decision for several reasons. A main reason is so I can control my creativity. I can remember reading an interview with Terri McMillan wherein she stated that her publisher wanted her to dumb-down her characters and cause them not to be as affluent/professional. I have since heard/read similar horror stories and the "powers that be" who are involved are all equally as ill-informed and insulting.
I wanted to make sure that my characters were allowed to be who they were created to be. I didn’t want anyone telling me to make Amerigua weigh less or to change in the inner or outer truth of any of my other characters. My novel will go through a professional editing process but I will have the final say-so which most publishing house authors lose when they sign their contract.
The downside is that every penny of this effort is solely funded by me. Given the state of the economy and related issues I have had to delay the release a few times but that’s just part of the reality of self publishing. I want to do this the right way – no short cuts so I am willing to wait until it can be done in a manner I am comfortable with.

A.J.'s Hot topic this week was Unlikely Heroes, I chose to illustrate the young kids in the Bronx who developed the music, dance moves, and art that planted the seeds for Hip Hop culture, originally base on Peace, Unity, and Having fun. These are the Unlikely Urban Heroes!
